Mentors
Our teachings come from a number of different principles. We
offer multiple tools for you to choose from. We do not believe
that there is one right way to achieving funny. Simply, we offer you all the
comedy skills that we know and allow you to develop and nurture
your own unique sense of humor on stage. Here are some of our
partners and people that have guided us and continue to guide us
in providing you with the best mix of comedy tools in the
business.
Bill Hicks
All great comedians are teachers. I was fortunate in my career
to be Bill's friend. Personally, I can't remember a comedian that
created more thought provoking material and awe amongst his
peers. He wasn't "trying" to be a comedian. He was just speaking
his truth. Bill taught me a lot about being present onstage and
never once mocked me for the poor habits that I picked up from
years of working and performing in Hollywood. Like Richard Pryor,
you may not agree with his opinions but the fact that he laid it
all out onstage is an inspiration. He died in 1994 and he is still
missed.
Greg Dean
I consider Greg to be the king of "process based" comedy training.
Greg has spent the last 20 years figuring out what funny people
do that the unfunny do not. At first I thought he was a bit of a
loon. However, over the years I have seen him take 1000s
of people from Unfunny to Funny. He believes that becoming
humorous is a learned skill and can be taught to anyone that
wants to be funny and has normal mental faculties. In terms of a
comedy teacher that will give you skills that you may have never
had before and explain to you how comedy works, I believe he has
no equal.
Jeff Jena
I consider Jeff to be the best "technique based" comedy teacher in
the business. He knows how the Stand Up comedy industry works.
He has multiple television appearances and an impressive working
resume. He knows all the decision makers in the industry
and how to successfully work the scene. He is a great comedian,
teacher and the manager of the Irvine Improv. You can't find
better real world comedy experience then from a 20+ year veteran in the
business.
Stephen Rosenfield
A great teacher in NYC. His method is much different than ours
but very effective. He is an exceptional comedy writer and great
leader to many NYC comedians. If you are on the East Coast and
want to do comedy... it's a great place to study.
Eddie Brill
Eddie Brill, for the past ten years and counting,
has worked on the Late Show with David Letterman. He is the audience
warm-up and Talent Coordinator for the comedians who appear on the
show.
He started stand-up comedy in the late 70's in college, but moved
back to NY and was a copywriter for an advertising agency for a
short while. But in July of 1984 he got back into doing stand-up
when he started, booked and hosted the very successful Paper Moon
Comedy Club in the west village of NYC and hasn't stopped since.
Since then he has become an international comedian who can work most
anywhere in the world...anywhere in the world where they speak
English of course. He has taped more than 100 television shows in
six different countries. He is also a 3-time MAC Award Winner
(Manhattan Association of Cabaret and Clubs) for Best Male Stand-up
Comic in NYC.
